Halloween Watches at THE WATCHERY

Corum Bubble Special Edition Black and Silver Dial Leather Over Rubber Men's Automatic Watch 082-150-56-F721FM01R

Yep! Halloween is creeping up. Corum's collection of freaky skull dials and pirate scimitars watch hands never fail to raise the hair on the back of my neck. Since I began my complete and utter infatuation with timepieces, it never fails to amaze me the potential emotional impact of a dial depiction. Take Corum's timepiece available at the Watchery for 40% off, the angular pointed jawbone of the skull, its anguished grimace and the crimson blood pooling in the eye socket can turn ones blood cold. The watch is a Bubble special edition Night Flyer.
The only Night Flyer I am aware of, besides mechanical man made flying machines and bats and such and such, is the terrifying beast conjured in the mind of Steven King. Steven King's Night Flier does look remarkably like the dial depiction without the winged armory above our Corum's skull, but I must say both images invoke a feeling of uneasy terror. A terror that makes one close the wardrobe door, check under the bed and recheck the lock on the front door just as one is falling off the precipice of consciousness and into a deep sleep.

I did mention the Corum Watch is a Bubble Watch didn't I? Well if you are just becoming interested in the wonderful world of watches, a bubble watch is one of the signature watches of Corum. The "bubble" is a 11 mm thick scratch resistant sapphire crystal forming a dome over the dial. Click here if you are interested in the history of Corum.

The Watchery has a huge collection of genuine Corum Watches all for a fraction of the MRSP.
You can be the hero this Halloween saving the world from imminent evil take over. The Zenith Defy is crafted from highly resistant titanium able to withstand the evil forces. A dial like this exudes heroic power. Beating beneath its sub dials of 9-branched silver propeller shaped brushed aluminum & 3 red blade propeller shaped is a movement known as the El Primero Caliber 4021SX, assembled with 278 components, beats at 36,000 vph. If the battle continues beneath the ocean, the Zenith Defy will not let you down. The Zenith Defy is water resistant to 1000 meters and is affixed with a Helium escape valve located on the edge of the case at the 10 o'clock position.
A helium valve enables divers who operate at great depths and spend prolonged hours under extreme pressure breathing a mix like trimix containing gases such as helium (tiny molecules) or hydrogen (smallest molecules found in nature) to release the helium molecules that have worked their way through the o-rings or other seals. The helium and hydrogen molecules cause no damage when the watch is at great depths under pressure but as soon as the diver resurfaces, a pressure difference occurs between the trapped gas(es) inside the watch case and the surrounding air. This can cause the crystal to pop off damaging the watch thus the helium valve is a crucial edition to diving watches enabling the diver to release the gas build up and restore equilibrium.

The Watchery has a huge collection of Zenith Watches all for a fraction of the MRSP.

So whichever way you wish to lean this Halloween, THE WATCHERY has you covered.

Corum Founder Dies at 95: Remembering his Life's Work

René Bannwart dies at 95 and thus the first Chapter of Corum comes to a close. René Bannwartis remembered for his unique creativity and design. Born in Zurich, he first worked at Pateck Phillipe and Omega before he and his Uncle Gaston Ries founded Corum in 1955. Working as a team, René Bannwart and his uncle rejuvenated his uncle's 1924 watch making workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds under the now world renowned brand Corum.
The name Corum stems from the word “quorum” which means “the minimum number of persons present, required to enable a meeting, to hold discussions and take valid decisions”.
Corum symbol - the key- emblazons every watch, a testament to opening new doors of creativity, innovation, watch design and possibilities. There is always a new door to open and the mystery of time can never be completely unraveled.

In 1956, Corum unveiled its first watches, which were quickly recognized by watch manufacturers for their distinctive creativity. Through the decades Corum has delighted and continues to delight watch enthusiasts and buyers with originality and craftsmanship.

Take a look at some of Corum's original masterpieces:1958 - Corum's "Chinese Hat" with an oblong, almost pyramid shaped bezel looking very much like the hats worn by the people of China.

1960- Admirals Cup watch, originally square, the first water resistant watch ever made which only obtained its contemporary 12 sided case in the 1983. Nautical pennants corresponding to the international maritime code were added and served as hour markers on the twelve-sided bezel. In 1992 the introduction of "The Admiral Tides" incorporated a Corum movement CO-277, which displayed information such as the lunar cycle, the strength and time of the tides, estimation of water levels as well as the strength of the currents.

1964- the "Coin Watch" sporting a genuine $20 Double Eagle Coin worn by U.S presidents and prominent figures looking very much like the Coin Watches sold today at THE WATCHERY.

1965 - Buckingham Model, large in size and extremely coveted. Due to the versatility of this collections shape and size, Corum has taken watch design to the extreme creating watches covered in jewels and others sporting skulls.

1966 - “Romvlvs” watch its hour markers engraved on the bezel not on the dial. The creation of this watch was born from a delivery mishap to a Basel World Fair and the creative quick thinking of René Bannwart. (read more) 1970- Corum introduced dials paved with real bird feathers, below find glowing words from the "San Antonio Express and News" dated December 10, 1972 in regard to Corum's Feather Watch.

In fashion — a beautiful 18 Karat gold watch with a feather dial! A n y o n e on your gift list would be delighted to receive a' new watch, especially an elegant jewel to wear all the time. . The feather dials, designed by Rene B a n n w a r t , are u n i q u e to Corum watches, and the unisex fashion is becoming ,the rage. The dials are made from rainbow - colored peacock or from brown - t o n e d pheasant feathers, which are sealed to.the gold' case. Each watch face is different, since two feathers are never the same in nature. Only feathers which birds have shed are selected, an interesting note that p r o v e s ecology even reaches into the fashion watch business.

1976 - “Rolls-Royce” watch intrigued watch buyers with its resemblance to the grill of a Rolls- Royce automobile, collection resulting from a collaboration between Corum and Rolls-Royce.

1980 - One of the most popular watch collections of today was born, "Corum's Golden Bridge" An incredible innovative movement visible via a sapphire case. (read more)

1986 - "Meteorite Model" with a dial cut from a genuine meteorite.1997 - Corum unveils the the “Tabogan” watch, which contains a mechanism allowing the watch to convert to a small stand up travel clock. Corum Bubble XL Chronograph (Regular Strap) Women's Watch Pink Dial on Pink Strap Diamond Bezel 396-157-47-F168 FP30R

2000 - The hugely popular Bubble Watch which still in hot demand and available at THE WATCHERY for 75% off the list price. The watch gets its name from the "Bubble" that sits above the dial. The "Bubble" is actually 11 mm thick sapphire crystal. The "Bubble Watch" is the perfect Valentines Day Gift.
Corum Trapeze Ladies' Watch Watch Stainless Steel White Dial Diamond Bezel on Pink Leather Strap 196-404-47-0008-PM81

2001 - “Trapèze” named after its elegant shape adding a whispering grace and creating timeless style.2005 - “Classical Vanitas” debuted with exceptional marquetry-work applied to watch dials. Stone stone and marble fragments are cut to fit together as an intricate mosaic. The collection depicted above, displays a skull motif. A motif which Corum often uses over a wide range of collections. (Corum's watches are always a Halloween treat). This particular model depicted above was unveiled in 2006 of which five versions were manufactured with a limited edition of 50.

2005 - Golden Bridge was reinvented.

2007 - Rebirth of the Romvlvs

2008- Admiral’s Cup Tourbillon 48 and Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar

2009- the Ti- Bridge housing the new CO 007 caliber. (I blogged about this watch with much relish - click here to read more)

2010 marks a new chapter for Corum. Corum will continue inspiring the watch world with outstanding timepieces which ,I have no doubt, will all be infused with the creative genius of its founder René Bannwart.

Halloween Watches! Yes it is Time!

A Corum Halloween Story. Warning: Not for the faint hearted.

The wind howling through the trees sends sharp prickles of terror up your spine. You are alone in the huge house set far from the street. Your face shines with a curious blue light cast from your glowing computer screen. Something falls! A shrill howl of pain, and a dull thud against the sliding patio door. Did you lock it? You don't know and too terrified to check.

It is Halloween night and you are all alone.
It is time to purchase a really scary watch from the Watchery.
A bump on the second floor landing; the drip of a leaky faucet; the scuttle of tiny feet; you turn on the music loud. Gazing out the window, you gasp and leap from your chair! You shriek out in horror! There is a face at the window. A white ghostly face with empty eye sockets, empty except for a pulsating red key. The skin on your face tightens and your heart pounds at your ribcage. The screech from the electric guitar adds to your terror. White blinding terror.
Yes !It is time to buy a really scary watch from The Watchery.
Corum Bubble XL Mens' Limited Edition Automatic Watch Blue Bat Dial on Black Leather Strap 082-150-20-0F01-BATS

You spin around searching for an escape. Lurching towards the door, you bang your shin on the coffee table. You don't feel the pain. As you reach the door, it opens by itself. On the level of your nose is a gruesome bat. Its fangs dripping with blood. The leathery wings flap in jerky motions sending puffs of foul air into the house. The bat blocks the doorway, and you cannot get to your car. The car that will take you to the center of town; to the party everyone is attending. Everyone, except you.
Having no choice, you turn and brace for the worst. It is Halloween night after all, and anything can happen. Lightening flashes and you are plunged into darkness and silence. Your eyes are drawn to the only light in your old old drafty house; drawn to the computer screen.

Staggering back to your computer chair, you hear something laugh. The laugh is not quite human, it has a strange guttural sound that weaves into the very fabric of your being. Another wave of panic sets in. The laughter again, and then a bright ball of fire careens through the sliding door window sending shards of glass tinkling to the ground.

"This must be a dream," you say, as the ball of fire stops just before you.

A skull wearing a hat, emerges from the fire.

"It is time to buy a really scary watch from The Watchery," the blazing skull says and the fire ball vanishes in a plume of smoke.
Corum Bubble XL Privateer Black Diamond Mens' Automatic Watch Pirate Skull Dial on Black Leather Strap LIMITED EDITION 082-157-49-F701-PIRR

"It is time to buy a really scary watch from THE WATCHERY," you repeat in a trance like voice, and select the watch you wish to purchase. The Corum Bubble Watch with the skull Pirate. As you add the Watch to Your Cart, the light flickers on. As you proceed to Checkout, the wind abates, and as you make the Purchase, the house is at peace.

You have bought your really scary watch from THE WATCHERY.

Perpertual Calender: An Intriguing Complication

Corum Classical Perpetual Calendar Men's Watch 18K Rose Gold Case Skeleton Dial on Brown Leather Strap 183-201-55-0F02-TR15

This Exquisitely crafted Luxury Watch By Corum houses a Perpetual Calender.
“A Perpetual Calender?” You may ask, sure you must know what it means, but cannot quite bring the information to the forfront of your mind. Well let me jog your memory a bit, and maybe add to the gaps, if any, you may have.
A Perpetual Calender provides the date, day, month while automatically making allowances for the different lengths of each month as well as leap years. A timepiece of this type may also display the moon phase.
This tiny function is a watchmaking masterpiece. Mechanical watches have no computer chip that can spit our information; mechanical watches rely solely on the ingenious crafting of tiny parts working in a symphony of movement. In light thereof, our Gregorian Calender with months of 28,30 or 31 days proved quite a challenge. Not to mention the leap years. Most watches have a simple calender that must be manually adjusted five times a year after each month with 31 days. The Perpetual Calender, on the other hand, will display the correct date, taking into account the different lenghts and the leap year. To accomplish this task, the movement draws on a “mechanical memory” of 1,461 days or four years. A majority of the Pepetual Calender mechanisms utilize a differential gear mechanism from the hour wheel. This mechanism can comprise of several hundred gears, levers, and other parts.
The perpetual Calender has its origins as far back as the late eighteenth century, and it still remians a classic. Watchmakers continually glean new inspiration from the perpetual calender. They are constantly attempting to perfect the mechanism by slimmer more compact versions as well as finding new innovative ways for displaying the multiple indications provided by the perpetual calender.
However, on March 1st 2100, please keep in mind that your Luxury Watch will have to be adjusted by one day. Now before you decide to return this watchmakers masterpiece, please keep in mind that the one day adjustment is not the fault of the watchmaker, but a “bug” in the Gregorian Calender. The Gregorian Calender rules that three centuries out of four will not be a leap year.

Corum Golden Bridge for the Ladies

Corum has taken a new position in regard to its iconic Golden Bridge collection by placing the he hand-wound mechanical baton movement horizontally. 2.5 carats of diamonds cluster on the bezel like flood lights illuminating a grand spectacle. And grand it is, the wheels in motion are captivating beneath the exquisitely engraved bridge.
The sultry curved lines of the bezel, perpendicular to the bridge provides exudes a sense of liquidity and elegance. The angled rows of diamonds are set with incredible precision.

As a result of the incredible complexity and craftsmanship required to manufacture a luxury watch with this degree of excellence, only a few Golden Bridge for ladies will be crafted each year. The watches will be available in either 18k red or white gold.

This watch is a true testament to Rene Bannwart, Corum's founder. Since Corum's establishment in 1955, Brannwart vision was to have highly unusual and aesthetically pleasing luxury watches. It was a given that movement of the watches were perfect, it was the perfect design Bannwart sought.

More Valentines Day Gift Ideas!

In the 4th century the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, identified the heart as being the most important organ of the body and the first to develop. He explained it was a hot dry organ that was the center of vitality in the body. All the other organs were only in existence to cool the heart. In the 12th century, Master Nicolaus described the heart as being the seat of all emotions and feelings. "If indeed from the heart alone rise anger or passion, fear, terror, and sadness; if from it alone spring shame, delight, and joy, why should I say more?" wrote Andreas de Laguna in 1535.
Poets and writers eulogized over the hearts connection to love, and so in time the heart came to symbolize love. The very origination of the heart shape has dimmed through the centuries and we only have left over artifacts to muse over its first appearance; however, wha
t we do know is that it has become the symbol of love. As to the red color, it depicts the color of blood, passion and strong emotion.

This blog is a Luxury Watch Treasure Trove.

In case you were confused by the word "Luxury" this watch will re clarify the concept. Chopard (Founded in 1860) sells a Super Ice Cube Luxury Watch. Retail $1,130,620. Take your Tourbillons - give me diamonds - lots and lots. 66.16 carats of diamonds including 1,897 brilliants, 288 trapeze-cuts, and a center case glimmering with 16 squares. The watch is subtly pretentious and overtly glamorous. Chopard offers over fifty variations on the "Ice Cube" from black diamonds to pastel sapphires to rubies. Chopard is renowned for its incredible "gem sense" in that every hand picked gem is placed on the watch in perfect harmony and balance.
This next watch is a Blancpain 1735 - Blancpain was founded in 1735 and this watch was named for the year. At first glance this Luxury Watch worth about One Million Dollars seems quite humble; however this watch has 6 individual complications. Two more than necessary to qualify as a "Grand Complication". The 6 Complications are compacted in an ultra slim 42 mm case which in itself can almost be deemed a complication. The Blancpain 1735 is equipped with:
a) A Perpetual Calander making allowances for different lengths of month as well as leap years till the year 2100.
b) Split-second chronograph or "rattrapante" which has two second hands, one of which can be blocked with a special dial train lever to indicate an intermediate time while the other continues to run. When released, the split-seconds hand jumps ahead to the position of the other second hand.
c)Minute repeater which has a striking mechanism with hammers and gongs for sounding the hours or quarter hours at the will of the wearer. The wearer pushes a slide which winds the spring. Most Repeaters use two different gongs to signal hours (low tone), quarters hours (high and low tones in succession), and minutes (high tone).
d) Tourbillon - said to compensate for the interference of gravity on the watch thus improving the watches accuracy, From the French word "whirlwind", in the Tourbillon the entire escapement escapement is mounted on a epicyclic train in a cage and rotated completely on its axis over a regular period of time, usually once a minute. A tourbillon is valued more for its superb horological craftsmanship than its actual functional abilities.
e) Moon-phase minder which displays the phases of the moon.

The streamlined case encapsulates 740 components that takes eight to ten months to build. This timepiece collection is limited to 30 watches. Crocodile Strap and 80 hour power reserve, what more could you ask for.
Hublot does everything big. The materials under the diamonds are invisible giving a perfect shimmer to the watch. The "Big Bang Chronograph" with a heart throbbing tourbillon is worth One Million Dollars.

The following three watches have yet to be priced, but my guess is it is going to be quite high and they add quite nicely to my treasure trove of watches blog.

This sleek bracelet is more bracelet than watch but since it is a Jaeger-LeCoultre creation the tiny watch nestled between the gleaming squares is a mechanical masterpiece of fine watch craftmanship. No price quoted as of yet for this Joaillerie 101 Manchette stunning timepiece.
This watch is the Tag Heuer Fantasy where for the first time the diamonds tell the time. There is no one other than Tag Heuer themselves to explain how this marvelous space age watch operates:

This luxury watch set with 879 Top Wesselton (5.8 carats) VS/SI (1.1 mm), full-cut, diamonds hides a surprising innovation: the digital display through the diamonds. 54 of the 879 diamonds have been cut in a revolutionary way to provide a very high-definition concentration of the light emitted by 54 LEDs (light emitting diodes) that display the time in glowing red. The red is echoed in the satin strap that gives a warm and silky look contrasting with the brilliance of the multiple diamonds.

There you have it and the price is inestimable as only three of these watches have been crafted. Quite mind-boggling that a creation like this has been limited to but three.
Diamond Rotolog Watch. Crafted by Watch Manufacturer Nixon. Interesting no doubt. I kind of cannot wrap my mind around it. This watch is studded with 1,851 diamonds - 764 full cut white diamonds while the remaining ones are full cut black diamonds, bringing the total number of carats to 9.25 carats.By this time I expect you to be salivating at the sight of all these luxurious items. I was going to sign off but Corum's Classical Billionaire Tourbillon kept on surfacing above my subconscious. Retailing at around a Million Dollars - Okay $998,000. A spectacular time-piece with a white gold case set with baguette diamond bezel, transparent dial and a stunningly blue alligator strap. The watch is a manual winding tourbillon with sapphire bridges. A 90 day power reserve with a 2007 limited production of 10 pieces.

A watch like this comes up for sale only once in a lifetime like a fleeting comet. The Girard-Perregaux Opera One. This luxury timepiece has no dial hiding the craftsmanship. The watch has three bridges, a tourbillon and a minute repeater sounding a Westminster Chime.

Imagine wearing one of these beauties on your wrist.

Corum's Admiral's Cup Collection still in the race!

The first luxury watch that ever caught my attention was a Corum Admiral's Cup watch. I remember being almost hypnotized by the nautical colored flags in place of the hour markers. It looked so "United Nations". I still love the look and a Corum Admiral's Cup Watch holds a very special place in my heart, like an old familiar friend. I eagerly anticipate the new Admiral Cup styles Corum releases each year.
Last year the Admiral's Cup Challenge 44 Regatta, a vision in red gold and rubber surfaced. Even though this is an older model than the 2008 Admiral's Cup Tides 48, I have chosen this one because this luxury timepiece is particularly striking. This timepiece is one of the strongest Corum has produced, inspired by the tough sport of sailing.

Corum has fused 18kt red gold with extremely resilient vulcanized rubber and to titanium accomplished using advanced technological methods. This sporty luxury watch boasts the best fully integrated chronograph movement available with a split-second function. With this incredible complication the Regatta can measure simultaneous events that commence at the same time but are of different durations such as in sailing races.
This Admiral's Cup Solid Gold Watch exudes a definite sense of Royalty. With this spectacular timepiece the nautical flags are embossed on the Bezel. The nautical flags seem to flutter in the gentle breeze as their skippers wait to embark on their competitive journey. The bright red second hand imparts a sense of urgency,in anxious anticipation for the race to begin. Having undergone the rigorous testing of the C.O.S.C this watch can proudly bare the label of a Certified Chronometer. This is a highly regarded certification only extended to the very best of movements.

The Admiral's Cup watches are being introduced year after year, growing in popularity. But what happened to the actual Admiral's Cup race? The race has not taken place in five years. It was canceled in 2001, 2005 and 2007. In 2003 the race took place in Australia, but not since then and no word about 2009. The actual Admiral's Cup is an international yachting regatta. It was organized in 1957 by the Royal Ocean Racing Club based at Cowes, on the Isle of Wright in England. It was a biennial event, happening every odd-numbered years. From 1957 to 1999 the cup was competed between national teams, each having three boats. In the beginning only USA and Great Britain took part, but later other countries competed. The race was highly regarded and in 1971, British Prime Minister ,Edward Heath, captained one of the winning boats.

In 2003 the competition was moved from Ireland to Australia for unknown reasons, and instead of being between different countries, it was watered down to a competition between different yacht clubs. Then the Admiral's Cup fizzled until ...

The Admiral's Cup is a truly inspirational race of endurance and strength and I sincerely hope we have not seen the last of the race. Indeed we do have Corum's Admiral Cup Collection which is a constant reminder of the Admiral's Cup race, as well as being an icon of Corum's success in its own right.

The Key to Corum

The Key. Corum's symbol. A key opens a locked door. Corum has flung the door open onto a vast world of vividly imaginative watches catering to many different tastes. Corum unlocked the hearts of many collectors and watch wearers alike. Search through Corum's collections and you will find a watch you will love.

Founded in 1955 in La Chaux - de - Fonds, Switzerland, by Gaston Ries and his nephew, Rene Bannart, Corum quickly became recognized as a trend setting watch brand. Uncle and Nephew started small, as a private label watch factory, and within a year turning into its own brand Corum. IN 1956 the first Corum Watch made its debut. For 40 years the pair created one-of-a kind imaginative watches, still sought after by vintage watch collectors.
Corum decided to maintain the success of Corum into the 21st century, Corum needed a boost, some fresh ideas, and thus to start the millenium off on the right foot, Severin Wunderman became the new owner. In 2004 his son, Micheal, became president. In addition, in 2007 Corum added to their team, Antoine Calre as Appointed Chief Executive Officer, bringing with him a rich knowledge and experience in Watchmaking. He oversees the entire process from the first seeds of design to customer service. Severin Wunderman died, at his home in France, on June 26th, 2008. He will be sorely missed. On August 18th, 2008 Corum announced Serge Weinberg, will replace Severin Wunderman as New Chairman of the Board.

Corum's name stems from the Latin word Quorum meaning
"The minimum number of members whose presence is necessary to make the proceedings and decisions of an assembly or society valid. It is then said a Quorum is reached."
The number of a Quorum is very definite depending on the society,

The key is the key to perfect time, and the last person to arrive at a meeting whereby a decision has to be made is the key that unlocks the process. Without that one final person the door is closed and no decision can be made.

The Watchery offers a wide range of Corum's imaginative watches. Allow Corum's key to unlock your heart and your mind.

Corum's Selection of Watches that have found the key to my heart is the Corum Bubble - named for the 11mm thick domed sapphire crystal. A Collection of watches stemming, in 2000, from the ideas of its . then, new owner, Severn Wunderman. With Corum's huge variety of styles, it is impossible to portray "Corum's Style" in terms of color, shape and size. I can portray Corum's style in the perfect craftsmanship, cutting-edge designs, and the sucess in creating the perfect image for the wearer.

Severin Wunderman, 69; high-end watch manufacturer built Gucci franchise

By Mary Rourke, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 28, 2008
Severin Wunderman, the owner of Corum, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer, who was also an art collector and philanthropist, died Wednesday at his home in Nice, France, his son, Michael, said. He was 69.

Wunderman, who built Gucci Timepieces into a multimillion-dollar business, died after a stroke, according to his son. He owned homes in Southern California, Las Vegas and Europe.

Wunderman began his career in the 1960s as a salesman for Alexis Barthelay, the European
watchmaking firm. During a business trip to New York City in the early 1970s he called on Gucci, a company known for luxury accessories. The owner, Aldo Gucci, happened to answer the phone.

The two men met for a drink and Wunderman convinced Gucci to place a watch order worth $250,000. It turned out, however, that Barthelay was not prepared to fill more than a small percentage of the order.

Wunderman then proposed to Gucci that he quit his job and oversee the manufacture
of the watches himself. The only problem was that he didn't have the
money to cover the costs.

"The man went into his pocket, took out his checkbook and prepaid the order," Wunderman recalled of Gucci in a 1986 interview with the Orange County Business Journal. "That's
what put me into business."

Wunderman established Severin Montres, with a sales office in Irvine, and remained the sole manufacturer and distributor of Gucci watches for more than 25 years. He had worked his way back from a near-devastating childhood.

Wunderman was born in Brussels on Nov. 19, 1938, the son of a Jewish glove manufacturer. When the Nazis invaded Belgium during World War II, his parents paid a Catholic priest to hide him and his two siblings in the countryside.

Severin was placed in a school for blind children where he was the only child with sight. A
gentile family took him in, and after the war they did not want to let him go home to his parents.

"My father was one of those people you didn't mess with," Wunderman recalled in a 1995 interview with The Times. "He came in, tied everyone up and took me out."

Wunderman's mother died when he was about 10, and he moved to Los Angeles, alone, to live with his older sister Bella, who was already settled in the city.

He quit high school, worked in a parking lot at night and managed a string of newspaper delivery boys by day.

His first step into the manufacturing business came when he was in his 20s and made and sold gold chain jewelry. From there he went to work in the watch business.

After establishing Severin Montres, Wunderman opened the Severin Wunderman Museum in the same Irvine building. He filled it with drawings, paintings, tapestries and art objects by the French modern artist Jean Cocteau that he had been collecting since he was 19.

In 1985 he opened the museum to the public. Ten years later, he donated the Cocteau collection to the University of Texas at Austin.

He sold his Gucci watch business in the late 1990s and bought the Switzerland-based Corum company in 2000.

His first major success with Corum was a "bubble" watch with a glass dome over the watch face that Wunderman compared to a submarine hatch.

He went on to create limited-edition watches with whimsical details, including a "Royal Flush" model that featured five playing cards in the same suit and a dollar sign on the second-hand. Another design, "Garden Bird," included a hummingbird among flowers. He also developed a series of gold and diamond watches.

After suffering a life-threatening case of lung cancer in the 1990s, he established the Severin Wunderman Family Foundation to support medical research on incurable diseases.

In 2005 Wunderman was presented with the French Legion of Honor for his cultural and philanthropic contributions.

Wunderman was married five times. Along with his son, Michael, who is president
of Corum, he is survived by another son, Nathan, and daughters Deborah Drucker and Raphaelle Cassens, all of the Los Angeles area; his daughter Elizabeth Wunderman of England; his brother, Max, of Beverly Hills; and four grandchildren.
