Since 1960, Movado has redesigned the cases and bands and even colors of the gold dot and its face, but the unwavering dot whether concave or flat remains in place. A gold dot at the 3 'o'clock position would be perceived as wrong and a gold dot at the 6 'o'clock position would be turned facing the other way. The dot shall remain as Nathan George Horwitt had designed it in 1947, at the 12 'o'clock position.

Are Ring Watches Back In?

Check out this ring watch. What do you think? In or out. Digit Watch does have the bling bling appeal, I grant that much, and don't get snarky about the movement. One may think the easiest and most cost effective movement to dump into a tiny space of this size would be a lovely little quartz movement, but not with this baby. This glittering cluster of diamonds has an entire smorgasbord of movements that can be chosen by you, the buyer. Movement from luxury brand names like Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breitling & Blancpain can be customized to fit into the Digit Watch.
Is Digit Watches the next big thing in time display? Well, probably not, but then again if you want to stand out from the crowd with something different and noticeable then a Digit Watch is the way to go. The Digit Watch is available, starting at £8000

Jewelery Watch of the Year Hublot Black Cavier Bang Out of This World.

Hublot won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve prize for jewelery watch of the year 2009, and I am not surprised. Limited to but one piece, the Black Cavier Bang is strictly black tie with a Solo T Tourbillon and Power reserve of 120 hours making this watch a power house. Hublot ,however, thinks it rather resembles caviar and has provided the watch with the title,"Black Cavier Bang."
At One million Dollars it does not matter what it is called, it matters what it costs.

The cost may have to do with shipping of the raw materials; specifically the Black Diamond. Hundreds of precision cut black diamonds totaling 34.5 total carats (322 on the case, 179 on the bezel, and 30 on the clasp), pave this watch and thus the surprising origins of the black diamond is quite pertinent.
What if I say, black diamonds have journeyed from outer space? No, this is not some cheap sci fi fictional notion that I have concocted. This is real.
According to geologists, black diamonds came to our earth from outer space. (Source: Astrophysical Journal Letters December 20, 2006) Otherwise known as carbonado diamonds, these diamonds contain trace elements of hydrogen which indicates an origin in a hydrogen-rich interstellar space. Infrared synchrotron radiation at Brookhaven National Laboratory was used to discover the diamonds' source.
In addition, black diamonds are found only in Brazil and the Central African Republic. In all the worlds mining fields whether it be South Africa, China, India; where 600 tons have been mined, not a single black diamond has been found. Another clue to the extraterrestrial nature of the black diamond is in its make up. The black diamonds Carbonado diamonds are typically pea sized or larger porous aggregates of many tiny black crystals.
Early data from scientists Jozsef Garai and Stephen Haggerty of Florida International University, as well as new research support the theory that showing that carbonado diamonds formed in stellar supernovae explosions.
Black diamonds were once the size of asteroids, a kilometer or more in diameter when they first landed on Earth.

No wonder the Hublot Black Caviar Bang is a world "first". Hublot says it is both a technological and artistic achievement. The setting is completely invisible and only the black and deep tones of rare black diamonds are visible.

Creating this exceptional watch demanded over 2,000 hours of meticulous work, from design to final adjustment. 544 VVS TW-IF quality baguette diamonds adorn the watch’s case, dial, crown and deployment clasp.

Now putting the black diamond in perspective, the One Million Dollar Price Tag doesn't seem that cosmic.

The Many Hues of Armand Nicolet Luxury Watches

Armand Nicolet 9154D-AS-M9150 MO3 Ivory Dial Stainless Steel Women's Automatic Chronograph Watch
Armand Nicolet is a company deeply embedded in the Swiss tradition of luxury watch craftsmanship. Situated in Tramelan in the Burmese Jura, Armand Nicolet captivates the precision, craftsmanship and perfection of watchmaking that has occupied this region for centuries. Armand Nicolet's Women's Watches evoke a sense of whimsical fantasy. The dials shimmer with hundreds of gentle shades provided by the composition of the mother-of-pearl.
Queen Elizabeth gave mother-of-pearl its name in the 15th century. The use of mother-of-pearl has a long history. In the 1920's tombs of Sumerian Royalty from ancient Mesopotamia yielded a grand treasure of gold, silver, gemstones and wooden ornaments and musical instruments inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Mother-of-Pearl was used in many cultures for various reasons, but one cannot help but notice the iridescent beauty of this material. It is created by the bivalves (two-part) mollusk who secrete in in the event of injury or the invasion of foreign particles. The secretion is comprised of calcium carbonate (derivative mineral of Aragonite) and conchiolin (a binding protein). Mollusks cannot regulate their own temperature and are extremely vulnerable to changing environmental conditions.
Armand Nicolet's use of mother-of-pearl stems from a tradition spanning thousands of years, and the result is as intriguing and mesmerizing as the artifacts found from past civilizations. Each watch is crafted with care and precision thereby providing an end product of extreme quality. Powered by the motion of ones hand, these watches require no batteries. The skeletonized hand add a delicate touch to the dial.

To Purchase the timeless beauty of an Armand Nicolet Luxury Watch, look no further than THE WATCHERY. For a limited time only, THE WATCHERY has reduced the prices by 60% on its collection of Armand Nicolet Watches.

The Effect of War on Watches

The demands of War has shaped the Watch Industry in countless ways. In the early, 1700's, tracking the inevitable passage of time was a matter of life and death. The intense need for an accurate timepiece was magnified on October 22, 1707, when four British Men 'O War sank just off the Cornish Coast and 2000 men were lost. This was not as a result of enemy fire, but rather human error. The fleet had no idea where they were, as they had no precise chronometer to decipher how far off the Longitude they were. The British Parliament , aggravated by this obviously needless catastrophe, passed the Longitude Act of 1714 whereby: A huge sum of money would be awarded to anyone who could invent a way to determine the precise longitude of a ship's location to within less than one degree. Click here learn more about the Longitude Act of 1714. John Harrison's marine chronometer was the first timepiece to successfully determine longitude at sea and his was awarded his prize, after much dispute, in 1773.
A pocket watch belonging to Abraham Lincoln recently turned up with an ancient engraving referencing the American Civil War - click here to read more.
In 1880, German Emperor Wilhelm I visited the Berlin Trade Fair and spotted some prototype wristwatches designed by Constant Girard , he ordered 1000 for the German Imperial Navy wristwatches, and by 1880, 2000 had been produced and delivered. The cage protected the watch face in battle. Although, wristwatches were more handy than the popular pocket watches, they still did not hit the general market until Santos-Dumont ,a Brazilian aviator and popular icon, began wearing one. He approached Louis Cartier to fashion a watch so that he could keep both hands on the aircraft controls during flight. Being the trendsetter of the early 1900's, he popularized the wrist watch. Click here to learn more about Santos-Dumont

During World War I, in the dark trenches, soldiers were not able to see their time pieces, and so luminescence was applied to the dial. Unfortunately, the luminescence used was comprised of highly radioactive Radium. While the lume was highly effective in reading the numbers of the dial in the dark, the young girls who had painted the lume on the dials, died from the results of the exposure.

Many Watches were designed with protective grills such as the
WWI British Air Force Military Watch depicted here.
Watches on today's market, are fashioned after military vehicles. The Cartier Tank was created by Louis Cartier in 1917, and inspired by the new Renault tanks which Cartier saw in use on the Western Front. The first Cartier Tank was presented to General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force. The lines and proportions are similar to those of tanks found on First World War battlefields. The bracelet represents the Tanks treads.
An entire company "U-Boat" is named after the German submarines from World War I and World War II. U-Boat is short for the German word "Unterseeboot" which literally means "undersea" boat.

Bell and Ross fashion its watches after the dials on a military aircraft. On March 18th, 2009, Bell and Ross became the official supplier to the French Air Force. The French Air Force requested that Bell and Ross create a watch specifically designed to meet the timepiece requirements of fighter pilots - the BR 03 Type Aviation. In addition, in Basel World, Bell & Ross unveiled the Limited Edition BR 01 Airborne which bares the skull motif on the watches dial. The motif originated in World War II and is accompanied by US Airborne motto, "Death from Above". A reminder of the courageous military paratroopers who jumped into enemy territory. The skull symbolized their incredible bravery . The skull motif was used by the military on fighter jets and patches. It was a symbol of strength and defiance of defeat even in the face of death. Today the skull is a tribute to all those brave men and women in combat who serve to defend this country. On March 18th, 2009, Bell and Ross became the official supplier to the French Air Force.

Many other brand Name Watch companies have become official suppliers for Army's. Breitling is the official supplier to the Royal Air Force, where the impeccable craftsmanship and exceptional endurance was tested in extreme atmospheric conditions.
Ebel supplied the British Royal Air Force with watches from 1939-1945.
Elgin (former watch company) issued this Canteen Watch to the U.S Navy during world war two. The crown flips off like the top of a canteen. (see inset)
In 1938, Longines crafted “Anti-magnetique” for the Czech Air Force.

Bremont, a British Luxury Watch Brand has taken history to a new dimension. Its EP120 pilot’s watch, depicted on the right, is made with parts from the famous RAF 1942 Spitfire Mk V fighter plane which shot down six enemy planes in a single day in World War II. Original parts of this plane has been featured in films such as the Battle of Britain. Pieces that were salvaged during the planes restoration have been incorporated into the EP120’s dial and movement.

In war, tracking time is a matter of life and death.

Today is Veterans Day. We salute all those who have put their lives on the line, and fought for this country.

U-Boat Luxury Watches from thousands of feet below to thousands of feet above.

So I am sure you are wondering what these two images have in common. Well the first image is just one of an amazing selection of watches crafted by the Italian Luxury Watch Company U-Boat. The watches looked familiar not because I recognized them, but because I recognized the rugged solid feel. The watches reminded me of beeping gauges, shrill sirens, soldiers urgent calls, and explosions. The watches are so set in their style These watches give me a sense of history. War History. Anyway I had no idea what a U-Boat was, so with a click of a mouse, I quickly discovered that it was a type of submarine the Germans had in World War I. U-Boat from the German word U-boot, which is a abbreviated form of Unterseeboot - Under sea boat i.e. Submarine. So now I have come to my second picture, the control room of a U-Boat. If you noticed on the far wall, there hang a couple of gauges, with a mounted face and thick bezel. The guage hands are stark and give a sharp contrast to the face so that they may be read with accuracy in times of imminent danger. Once I saw the gauges, I understood the U-Boat watches.

The company has only been around since the turn of the century (this century), the year 2000; however, it is forging ahead with its new historical designs and gaining a steady following.

Mechanical vs Quartz

My first intention when writing this blog was to simply indicate the difference between a Quartz watch and a Mechanical watch. It seemed quite a straightforward project at the time - that is until I started reading through Internet articles and blogs. I started by reading informative articles about the major differences between Quartz and Mechanical watches; I read the simple explanations and then I delved a bit deeper into the not so simple explanations. Everything seemed tranquil and scientific … until I clicked on a thread. I could feel the tension lifting off the WebPages, a kind of harsh grating tension that makes the hairs quiver on the back of ones neck. This came as a surprise – their seemed to be a definite Quartz vs Mechanical Competition going. Almost like color war in camp. Suddenly the Quartz team and the Mechanical team were firing shots at each other. Some threads became quite alarming that I found all too soon my heart hammering in my chest. What was this all about? I kept on reading, my eyes closing, but everyone involved seemed so heated that I wanted to know more. So after a couple of hours and piles of printouts; I felt somehow I was preparing for battle. The quartz vs Mechanical battle. I still have not finished reading my pile of printouts and I am getting more and more anxious about the whole Quartz / Mechanical thing.

In the 1970's Quartz watches almost ground the tradiotional mechanical watch into oblivion, on the other hand Quartz watches lifted mechanical watches from the edge of extintion with the introduction of the hugelyu popular Swatch watch. The Swatch Watch poured enormous wealth into the S
wiss Watch Market allowing the older traditional companies like Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin to regain momentum.
There are definite advantages to owning a Quartz
Watch:

  • Quartz Watches are battery operated and thus need no winding.
  • Quartz Watches allow for increased functionality based on modern technology such as theTissot SEA-Touch, with incredible cutting edge patented technology which allow divers the knowledge of time in two time zones, the depth of the current dive, digital chronograph, thermometer, alarm, perpetual calender date, compass and divers logbook. All activated by a light touch on the crystal. Even in the dark depths of deep sea diving, divers are still able to consult their Tissot SEA-Touch by extremely luminescent material as well as a strong back light.
  • Quartz Watches are more affordable.

  • Quartz Watches cab be thinner
Mechanical Watches ,as I see it, have a slightly different function. Mechanical Watches are part of ones image. I know a young man who came into the real estate business. He was relatively inexperience, but an excellent negotiator. He signed a grand deal much to the amazement of his senior colleagues, and the next day he purchased a Audemars Piaget Millenary. He did not hesitate when upgrading his image. A brand name watch of distinction is a subtle sign of success.

A Mechanical Watch is powered by winding - read this link for full details.
  • Mechanical Watches are entrenched in the longstanding tradition of watchmaking, spanning 400 years.

  • Mechanical watches are self sufficient; once assembled they never require any additional component. A watch, in good condition, crafted 200 years ago can still run like new. In essence a mechanical watch is timeless, unmarked by the passage of time.

  • Mechanical watches is truly "green" never depleting earth's energy resources.

  • Expert watch designers and watch makers plan every new model

  • There is an obvious distinction between a replica mechanical watch and a 100% genuine mechanical watch. Replica's have shoddy craftsmanship made from inferior quality metals, and semi precious stones.
  • Complicated Mechanical Watches have complications such as a perpetual calender, tourbillon, chronograph, minute repeaters and more. Each complication requires many small specialized components which fit together to perform a function in perfect harmony.
  • Finally, fine mechanical watches, like diamond rings, are heirlooms meant to be passed on from generation to generation. A mechanical watch is your messenger into the future.
The Watchery sells Mechanical and Quartz Watches at rock bottom prices. All watches are 100% genuine name brand timepieces with serial numbers.

These are only a few points in regard to quartz and mechanical watches. I would love to hear feedback. Please comment and add a point or two.

The Yankees Have Won!

Yankee fans all over are rejoicing the victory after winning their 27th World Series, beating the Phillies 7-3 in Game 6. If you are a New York Yankee fan then this is the watch for you. Well for 100 of you since this watch is a limited edition of a mere 100 pieces worldwide. The watch created by a new Swiss company N.O.A ,an acronym for None of the Above, was commissioned by Joe Girardi, (Yankees Manager and official spokesperson for N.O.A. Hamilton Jewelers ), and the New York Yankess back in February when NOA partnered with Hamilton Jewelers for their most recent watch fair.

Joe Girardi, former MLB catcher and current New York Yankees Manager wears his NOA timepiece at a recent press conference.

On the white dial, each watch has the Yankees emblem , a copy of Joe Girardi's autograph as well as individual number of the watch. The watch comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Joe Girardi himself. The watch comes complete with box, warranty card, instructions and certificate of authenticity. The 40mm case is stainless steel
40mm stainless steel case. The Crown is screw down thereby increasing the water resistance to 10 ATM/330 feet. The watch dial is protected by scratch resistant sapphire crystal. When I last checked the going rate for one of these watches was around $3,000, but with the Yankees win this watch has just become more desirable, and more collectible.

Although N.O.A is a relatively new company introducing its first collection in 2003, the origins of it date back to the late 19th century when Swiss businessman ,Federico Ruefly, established two factories, " Ruefli Federico Spa" in Coma, Italy and "Fabrique de Boites des Montres SA" in Chiasso, Switzerland. The factories manufactured brass and stainless steel watch components for the Swiss and Italian market. In 1922 his four daughters joined him when he moved the factory to Coma, Italy. The new N.O.A company has merged Italian style and Swiss Watch making expertise to create functional style. A watch that works for you.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro now at THE WATCHERY

THE DEAL OF THE DAY
Guiliano Mazzuoli Manometro
$ 2,380.00 (60% off the List Price)

Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro Sport Men's Automatic Watch Titanium Black Carbon Fiber Dial on Black Rubber Strap 7470S0C-510FABL

Can you handle this watch? It screams tires on a hot road and tangy scent of gasoline. That said, this is one of my favourite Giuliano Mazzuoli watches, and to think he started out manufacturing notebooks and pens... (click here to learn more about Giuliano Mazzuoli)

This watch exudes unbridled energy from its black carbon fiber case and dial. Black carbon fiber dates back to 1879, when
Thomas Edison used carbon fibers as filaments for early light bulbs. His fibers lacked the tensile strength of today's carbon fibers, their considerable tolerance to heat made these fibers ideal for conducting electric. Edison’s carbon fibers were comprised off cellulose-based materials like cotton or bamboo.

Today, Caron Fiber is made from heated plyacrylonitrile during an extremely intensive and complicated heating process. Known as the wonder polymer, Carbon Fiber is resilient, shock absorbent as well as being stronger and lighter than steel.

The case back is crafted from, titanium - extremely light weight and strong. The bracelet is black rubber, which provides extreme flexibility.

The movement is an automatic caliber: ETA 2824/2 with a shockproof system. This allows for maximum movement protection during high impact activities. As the watch is automatic, the movement is powered by the swinging motion of ones arm.
As you can see the crown is placed at the 2 'o'clock position, a signature mark of the Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro.

Do you think you can handle the pace of a Manometro? Find out at THE WATCHERY for 40% off the list price.

Antique Watch Parts with a Sting.

Do you see what I see? Could it be part watch movement, part ... beetle? Huh? This creation is the brainchild of artist Mike Libby, who founded a highly original company called "Insectlab" He joins mostly antique mechanical movement watch parts, and non-endangered high quality specimen from Africa, China, New Guinea, Brazil, and any other places where insects are huge and hairy. Mike Libby has a Degree in Sculpture from RISD, and has been in many exhibits in the USA and Canada. There is a definite Sci-Fi feel to his creations, as he says he likes to merge the real with the unreal, fantasy with history, and mechanics with nature. His "aha" moment came as he stared at a dead intact beetle. He thought how the workings of an insect was like a tiny bit of mechanical machinery. With this association in mind, he thought of a mechanical watch, which he had on hand and combined the two.

The effect is quite impressive, and his insects, especially the beetles, remind me of Harry Potter's Golden Snitch in the game of Quidditch or the poisonous mechanical flying insects set loose to find Lyra in The Golden Compass. His one-of-a-kind creations are available on his InsectLab website, but don't expect them to tell the time.

The Movement of an Old Watch

In this world of gadgets and gizmos, one expects stuff to work; if not it gets thrown out or if the effort is worth it, get it fixed.

A delicately crafted watch case which stopped working ...

"Oh 50 years ago, and I never really got it fixed,"as per great grandma, may be viewed with slight dismay by Billy, a watch novice. Billy may be holding a truly exceptional masterpiece from a great company like Vacheron Constantin or Patek Phillipe, but to Billy the watch is a broken old thing.

One such story occurred to my neighbor and it took an aged indignant watchmaker to change her view on old watches:

My neighbor received a package from her mother. She opened it and gazed at a rose gold watch delicately wrapped in tissue paper, a faint whiff of mothballs tickled her nose.

“It was Grandma’s” she whispered gently closing the clasp around her wrist. She admired the delicate Roman Numerals and studied the blue stone on the dial. Her grandmother had died a month before and her mother had only just found the watch among her things. The watch was not working and she decided to take it to an old watchmaker , to see if she could get a battery for this watch. Wearing this watch would remind her of her grandmother and that was good.

The very next day she set out to the watchmaker. She had seen his store from the city bus, an old faded yellow sign hung above a tiny dusty store front. She entered the store ,and as she did a gentle chiming brought an elderly gentleman from behind a beaded curtain.

“Can I help you, mam?” he said looking at her over the tops of his glasses.

“I was wondering if you can make this watch workable …,” she said trailing off.

“It was my grandmothers…”

The watchmaker took the watch and held it close.

“It is a beauty,” he said and gently wound the watch.

He smiled and said, “It can use a new mainspring and a good cleaning and oiling and then it will be as good as new.”

“No! You don’t understand,” she said, “Can you take out all the old stuff and put in a battery or something like a regular watch.”

The elderly watchmaker grew visibly distressed, his nose turned slightly red and he leaned across the counter. My friend had no idea what she had said wrong, but owing to the watchmaker’s reaction it must have been quite awful.

“You want to remove the intricate mechanical craftsmanship and replace it with a battery? A battery?”

“Yes! I think so.” my friend said.

“I will do no such thing, ” the watchmaker said. “To do this would be tearing the heart and soul out of your grandmother’s watch.”

My friend took the watch, puzzled, and went home. She did not attempt to visit another watchmaker.

Her grandmother’s watch survived its “quartz scare” and I filled my friend in on the marvel of a mechanical watch. The watch is her treasure now.
